We talk a lot on this blog about different pieces of information about candles. We have given you great insight on how to sell your candles, great ways to make them, and other useful candle related products. I hope we have educated you greatly in this area, as it is our expertise and something we are extremely passionate about.
Over our existence, we have provided all of this information, but we really haven't talked much about ourselves. This article has been long overdue, as we haven't really had a chance to give a little bit of an overview of our company and what makes it stand out from the other guys. Read on for a description on how our company strives to be the most sustainable and economically friendly company we can possibly be.
Chicago Candle Factory is very environmentally friendly in several ways. We don't harm our planet, instead, we actually are striving to make it a cleaner and better place one candle at a time. Below is how we do this.
As the title of the article suggests we are a company of sustainability. But what exactly does that mean? Sustainability is defined as "the ability to be maintained at a certain rate or level" and "avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance."
So what how does that relate to us? Well for starters, all the containers that hold our candles are salvaged from bars and restaurants all over Chicago that our owner has collected over time. They were going to the actual trash and we kept that from happening. As you can tell, they are all glass, which takes thousands of years to biodegrade. We took these and turned them into a product that people love. Not only did we prevent glass bottles from going to the landfill, but we also created a candle without having to manufacture a container for it. That is the textbook definition of sustainability because the more candles we make actually betters the environment. There have been over 7000 candles that we have made to date, so that's a lot of trash. Probably less than 1% still but it's something and will only grow with more purchases.
100% Soy Wax
We've talked about this subject before, like in our article Why Soy Wax? This is the staple of our business as we only want to provide the highest quality and healthy candles.
All of the soy wax we buy is grown locally. They say 95% of all soy wax in the U.S. is grown in Indiana, Illinois, and Iowa. Those are all easily within a driving distance of us. This means we aren't shipping them across the country and are therefore cutting back carbon emissions. I know it may seem like a small amount, but every little part counts.
Most candles you would buy at other stores are Parrafin, which isn't really even natural wax. It's a by-product of oil and is terrible for the air pollution and bad for people to inhale. Not only are our soy wax candles healthier, but they also burn much more efficiently. Despite being the same size as most paraffin candles, soy wax candles burn much slower and usually last at least twice as long. They have much stronger and longer lasting aromas so there is no need for them to burn faster. They also burn more evenly and all of the aromas are natural. The scents aren't created artificially in a lab with an excess amount of chemicals. Keep those factors in the back of your mind when shopping for candles. Yes, soy wax ones are a little more expensive, but they usually pay for themselves and are such higher quality.
Where Materials Are Manufactured
The relative closeness of where the material is made is a huge factor of business that normally is overlooked. The wicks for all cotton made in the USA, as are the weight tabs. Again attributing to our national economy instead of outsourcing our jobs overseas and having to ship them across the world. The fragrance oils we use have no chemicals or additives that are harmful to people, that seems cleaner somehow environmentally. Besides just the containers, the packaging themselves are all recyclable with a large part of it being recycled material already. We urge all of our customers to recycle their products when they are done with them, as that will make it to where our company is wasting nothing.
The tags and the business cards are the same situations printed locally in Chicago. People even are able to clean out the candles when they're done and continue to use them for vases or pencil holders or whatever they do with him. This whole thing was spawned by our owner, the idea that we don't need to throw anything away ever again. There's so much stuff around, we can use it for other things. Not to sound boastful, but I think that every company could learn a thing or two when it comes to reducing waste and recycling materials that are still very useful.
In the time we live in now, with a majority of stores being huge chains and corporations, our business model is completely the opposite. As you can tell from our locations, we only sell to smaller brick and mortar style of stores. We feel it is important to give back to the community and we heavily support local businesses in the Chicago and all around. All of our candles are manufacture in Chicago all by local artists. We are a local business ourselves and we take great pride in that.
Supporting a local business is something we do and hope all of our customers do as well. If you shop at big brand stores, yes you may save a couple of bucks. But the support you will be providing to those who own smaller businesses will greatly appreciate it. Therefore, you are positively contributing to the local economy, as you make it able for the shop owners to create jobs and specialize in their art.
Not only do we think it is great for the local economy, we also know that you will have a much personalized and welcoming experience at a local store. When you walk into a large national chain store there is so much going on and so many products to buy. It's huge first off, so finding an employee to help you with something is a challenge by itself. The employees in these stores have to know only the basics about everything in the store, and because there are so many products they won't have expert knowledge in any particular field. It's the classic example of the old saying "jack of all trades, master of none."
Shopping at a local store couldn't be more different of an experience, especially when it comes to one specializing in the art of candles. For starters, these shops are small and therefore easy to navigate. The shop is strictly dedicated to candles and everything related, so that is all the employees have to focus on. They know a lot about each product and can answer any questions you may have. Many times the owner of the shop will be working so you can definitely guarantee that they will be passionate about these products.
Speaking of products, that is another huge benefit of these businesses. They will have such a wide array of products that you will easily be able to find dozens of scents and products you love. They also have a much more personalized and home-made feel about them. Take a look at our candles. Each is unique in its own little way and no two candles are the same. This is very refreshing to most people, as they are probably used to constantly buying products that came off of an assembly line with a million others the exact same. You definitely won't get that with one of our candles or any of these other shops.
All in all, shopping at one of these shops will be a much more personalized experience, and that is why we only do business with these types of shops.
As you can tell, we take great pride in our company, as it is one of sustainability and can last a lifetime. We are providing extremely high-quality handcrafted products to people all over the world.
Our candles are all made from recycled bottles that would have just ended up in a landfill, sitting there for thousands of years. Instead, we take this 'garbage' and turn it into a beautiful piece of art that not only would look great inside any home but also provide strong and rich aromas. Being 100% soy wax is another big key in our business, as we think that is the only type of candle that should me made to ensure only the best quality.
As always, never hesitate to contact us if you have any questions regarding our shop. Whether it's about new products, locations, or hours, we would be happy to help.
