The verdict
Diptyque still throws harder than anything else we tested. Baies filled the room in 29 minutes, the fastest reading on the board, and held at 26 feet. What it does not do is justify itself on materials: the blend is paraffin forward, the glass is beautiful and functionally disposable, and the entry size is small for the money. You are buying a fragrance house that happens to sell candles, and on that basis it earns the number two slot comfortably.

About Diptyque
Diptyque opened on Boulevard Saint-Germain in 1961 as a design shop selling printed fabric, then drifted into candles almost by accident. Sixty-five years later the oval label is one of the most recognisable objects in home fragrance, and the company's perfumers remain the best in the category at getting a scent to travel across a room.
The catalogue is enormous and uneven. Baies, blackcurrant leaf and Bulgarian rose, is the one everybody knows and the one that earns the reputation. Figuier, Feu de Bois and Ambre are the other three we would spend money on without hesitating. Below that tier there are a lot of pleasant, forgettable pours at exactly the same price, which is the main trap for a first-time buyer.
The wax is a paraffin and vegetable blend, and that is precisely why the throw reads the way it does. Paraffin holds more fragrance oil and releases it faster than soy. That is a chemistry advantage rather than a craft one, and it is the reason the sustainability column scores where it does.
