Jo Malone has the best cold throw on this list by a clear margin. Lift the lid in a shop and Lime Basil and Mandarin reads instantly, which is most of why it sells. Lit, it is good rather than exceptional: our test room took 47 minutes to fill and the scent held at 19 feet. At 200 g and 45 hours it is also the weakest hours per dollar in the affordable luxury tier. Buy it as a gift, which is precisely what it was engineered to be.

Jo Malone London built the modern gifting playbook. The cream box, the black grosgrain ribbon, the single-note names that tell you exactly what you are getting: Lime Basil and Mandarin, Wood Sage and Sea Salt, Pomegranate Noir. Nobody in home fragrance has ever been better at making an object feel considered before it is opened.
The scents themselves are built around the house idea of fragrance combining, which means most of them are deliberately simple. That works beautifully in the cold: two or three legible notes hit you the second the lid comes off, and the cold throw score here is the highest we have recorded. Lit, that same simplicity means there is less depth to unfold over a 45 hour burn.
The candle is a 200 g single wick in a lidded cream glass. It burns cleanly and slowly, it never tunneled on us, and it takes a full session to open a melt pool to the edge. It is a well-made candle at a price that assumes you are buying it for somebody else.
